Swansea became known as Copperopolis because, from 1720, 50% of the world's copper and 90% of the UK's copper was smelted in the area. Penderyn's new distillery is in the powerhouse of the Old Copperworks Building. This is number 12 in the Icons of Wales series of bottlings celebrating a significant person, milestone or event from Wales.
In turning ore drawn from the Welsh hills into high quality copper, Copperopolis was born to create riches from the land. In 1980, production of copper ceased when the Hafod works closed, but in 2023 Penderyn Distillery Swansea forged a new future for Copperopolis, mastering the elements of Wales once more to create the precious liquid we cal Aur Cymru, the Gold of Wales.
