MAIPO VALLEY

Maipo Valley is a Chilean wine region close to the Chilean capital, Santiago. Mainly known for Cabernet Sauvignon grapes (or Cab Sauv blends), Maipo Valley is the birthplace of the Chilean wine industry, stretching back over 150 years.

There are three parts to the region:

Alto
a mountainous region in the foothills of the Andes – known for a big temperature variation (good for growing wines) as the sun takes a while to rise above the Andes peaks in the east. The stress of poor climate and rocky soil ensures a bold Cabernet Sauvignon grape develops.

Chile - Alto Maipo

Central
which surrounds the Maipo River. Warmer and drier than Alto with less rain.

Chile - Maipo Valley

Pacific
on the edge of the Pacific Ocean, a newer wine region with alluvial soils (loose clay, silt, gravel deposited by a river). The oceanic influence leads to a more acidic grape and is a better environment for growing the white grape Sauvignon Blanc.
