TEMPRANILLO
A thick-skinned black grape, Tempranillo is the world's fourth most planted vine and almost 90% of these are in Spain making it Spain's most popular grape. The name comes from the Spanish for early ('temprano') as it ripens before most other Spanish grapes. In Portugal, it is known as Tinta Roriz and is often used in Port. Tempranillo Blanco is a white grape mutation.
It is the main grape used in Rioja. It is often blended with Grenache and Carignan, where it will make up the largest proportion of the blend. As it has a fairly neutral flavour it is often aged in oak caks to take on the oak flavours. Aromas and flavours include cherries, plums, figs, tobacco, vanilla and leather. Combine it with steak, lamb or tomato dishes.
