Albarinho/Alvarino
A white grape, popular in Spain and Portugal. Refreshing sparkling whites, citrussy and salty. High acidity; low sweetness, body and tannins

Assyrtiko
White grape from Greece, with notes of lime, passionfruit, beeswax. High acidity; low sweetness, body and tannins.

Barbera
Grape used in affordable and approachable Italian reds (chiefly in Piedmont). Notes of cherry, liquorice, blackberry, herbs, black pepper.

Blaufrankisch
Black grape grown chiefly in Hungary, Austria and Germany for medium body reds. Related to the Gamay and Zweigelt grapes. Notes of blackberries, black cherries, allspice, chocolate. Medium acidity and tannins; low sweetness.

Carignan
A productive, drought resistant vine, growing in popularity, grown primarily in France. Notes of: cranberry, raspberry, tobacco leaf, spices. Medium-bodied wine with low sweetness.

Black grape grown chiefly in Chile and Argentina producing medium-bodied reds. Notes of raspberry, sweet pepper, black plums, paprika, garlic

Cinsault
A black grape with low tannins grown in France  and South Africa, often used in red blends. Versatile for food pairing. Notes of raspberry, redcurrant, tart cherry, violets, black tea.

Colombard
Often used in brandy production in Armagnac or belnded with Sauvignon Blanc and 
Chardonnay. Grown primarily in South Africa, USA and France. Notes of green apples, honeydew, white peach, lemongrass, almond. High acidity, low tannins and sweetness. Good with salad and sushi.

Furmint
Hungary's most famous grape, used in Tokaji Aszu dessert wine. Also grown in Slovenia and Slovakia. Notes of: lemon, green apple, ginger, smoke, pepperoni. Sweet wine with low tannins.

Gamay
A fruity floral black grape grown mainly in Beaujolais. Notes of pomegranate, blackberry, violet, potting soil, banana. Low tannins and medium acidity. Good with all dishes.

Garganega
White grape, main grape of Soave, grown chiefly in Italy. Goes well with lighter meals. Notes of peach, honeydew, tangerine, marjoram, saline. Low tannins.

Gruner Veltliner
Austria's most important grape. Also grown in Slovakia, Hungary, Czech Republic and Italy. Notes of: yellow apple, pear, asparagus, white pepper, flint. High acidity, low sweetness and tannins. Good with seafood and light meals - a palate cleanser.

Marsanne
Good white blending grape for Rhone blends and a good alternative to Chardonnay. Notes of: quince, mandarin orange, apricot, acacia, beeswax. Low tannins and acidity. Pair with shellfish or Asian food.

Monastrell/Mourvedre
Bold and smokey flavoured grape (known as Mourvedre in France; Monastrell in Spain) - an important grape in Rhone blends. Notes if blackberry, black pepper, cocoa, tobacco and roasted meats. Grown most in Spain and France. High tannins and low sweetness. Good with smoked meats and barbecues.

Montepulciano
Mostly grown in the Abbruzzo region of Italy, this black grape has black fruit flavours of redd plum and blackberry, along with dried thyme, baking powder and mesquite.

Muscat Blanc
All styles or wine are produced - dry, sweet aromatic, still, sparkling and fortified - with this sweet grape from Greece. Notes of orange blossom, lemon, mandarin, ripe pear and honeysuckle. Also fgown in Italy, France and Spain. Goes well with salads, sushi and ripe fruit.

Nero D'Avola
Sicily's most imporant grape, similar to Cabernet Sauvignon with bold fruit and robust tannins. Notes of black cherry, black plum, licquorice, tobacco and chilly pepper. Works well with rich meats and meat soups.

Petit Verdot
Often a minor blending grape in Bordeaux, Petit Verdot produces smooth full-bodied high-tannin reds. Notes of black cherry, black plum, violet, lilac and sage. Great with roasted meats and blue cheese. Grown across the world, most notably in Spain and Australia.

Petit Sirah
Related to Syrah, this deeply coloured black grape has bold tannins and notes of sugar plum, blueberry , dark chocolate, vlakc pepper and black tea. Very popular in the USA. Good with steak and beef.

Picpoul
Translating as 'stings the lips', Picpoul is an old French grape with high acidity. Notes of green apple, citrus blossom, lemon and thyme, it goes well with seafood.

Pinot Blanc
A mutation of Pinot Noir, producing dry refreshing whites, often used in sparkling Franciacorta wines. Notes if pear, peach, almond lemon zest. Grown in Germany, Italy, Austria and France. Pair with cheeses and salads.

Pinotage
The Pinotage grape is a Cinsault and Pinot Noir producing full-bodied hig-alcohol wines. This South African grape has notes of black cherry, blackberry, fig and menthol and is good with meat and veg and flavoursome sauces.

Rousanne
French grape (also grown in USA and Itraly) that produces full-bodied whites. Often blended with other grapes such as Grenache Blanc. Notes of lemon, apricot, beeswax.
Try with shellfish or pate.

Touriga Nacional
Portuguese grape used mainly in Port, single varietal and blended reds. Floral and fruity with strong tannin. Notes of violet, blueberry, plum and mint. Great with steaks and blue cheese.

Trebbiano Toscano/Ugni Blanc
Grwin in Italy and France (known as Ugni Blanc in France), this grape is used promarily in brandies and blasamic vinegars but is sometimes used in dry whites. Notes of peach, lemon, green apple. The dry whites are good with hard cheese, pizza, seafood and chicken.

Verdejo
Herbaceous white from Rueda in Spain with low tannins and medium acidity. Good as a palate cleanser. Notes of lime, honeydew, grapefruit pith, fennel.

Vermentino
White grape grown in Sicily and Tuscany (and France to a lesser degree, where it is used in Provence Rose). May be oaked or unoaked. High acidity. Notes of lime, grapefruit, green apple, almond.

Xinomavro
Similar to Nebbiolo or Borolo, this red grape from Naoussa in Greece produces medium-bodied reds with high tannins that work well with cheesy pasta and risottos. Notes of raspberry, plum sauce, anise, allspice and tobacco.

Zweigelt
A cross between Blaufrankisch and St Laurent, Zweigelt is Austria's most planted red grape and produces highly fruity, tarty reds and roses. Notes of red cherry, raspberry, black pepper, licquorise and chocolate. Also grown in Hungary.
