SYRAH / SHIRAZ
Producing rich and powerful red wines, the dark-skinned Syrah grape originates from south-eastern France but is now the most popularly grown grape in Australia, where it is known as Shiraz, to differentiate its taste from grapes grown in Northern Hemishere climates.
In the North, Syrah produces medium or full-bodied reds with high tannins; in the hotter South, Shiraz is more full bodied with softer tannins.
Syrah is used in single varietals and also in red blends.
Notes of blueberry, plum, chocolate and tobacco dominate and the wines complement dark meats, Asian and spicy food.
