SANGIOVESE

An Italian red grape, Sangiovese means 'the blood of Jupiter' and the grape is most popularly grown in Tuscany. Legend says that the grape was first grown by the Romans.

It is used in a number of wines: as the only grape in Brunello di Montalcino (and Rosso di Montalcino) and in blends for Chianti and Carmignano. The Brunello grape is a clone of Sangiovese. When young, strawberry and spices dominate but the flavour can acquire oaky tarry notes when barrel aged. Notes of cherry, espresso and balsamic vinegar may also be present. Sangiovese complements well-spiced food and tomato dishes.
