Across the world there are many of varieties of grape.
The simplest categorisation is between light coloured grapes that are used for whte wines and dark grapes used for red wines but there is a whole range between these two. Grapes and vines are affected by sun, moisture, the ground they are grown on ('terroir' - 'land','earth') and many other factors which determine the taste, sugar content, etc.
