PGI WISGI CYMREIG | WELSH WHISKY PGI
Awarded in July 2023, Welsh Whisky is now the 20th Welsh PGI.
It is the first spirit to receive geographical indication status since the UKGI was launched in 2021. The UKGI was set up to ensure certain UK foods and drinks could ensure legal protection against imitation after the UK's withdrawal from the EU.
The production of welsh whisky has expanded rapidly since its revival 20 years ago and it is now exported to over 45 countries with exports over £20m per year.
Welsh whisky is regarded as a quality spirit and there are a broad range of flavours and styles of Welsh whisky, catering to most palates.
The PGI applies to products from five whisky distilleries: Aber Falls, Coles, Da Mhile, In The Welsh Wind and Penderyn.
