Velfrey Vineyard Naturiol at Blas ar Fwyd
Established in 2016, Velfrey Vineyard occupies a gentle south facing slope of the Lampeter Vale in the south Pembrokeshire countryside.
Velfrey Vineyard is a family-run, low intervention vineyard situated on a sheltered south-facing site. The vineyard extends to just over one hectare and has in excess of 4000 vines and the varieties are specially selected to thrive and ripen in conditions producing wines of exceptional quality.
The vines are of three varieties of grape, all chosen for their suitability for the Welsh environment:
Pinot Noir
The classic sparkling varietal, Pinot Noir's thin skins and low tannin levels make it perfect for cooler climate conditions It produces high quality, complex wines.
Seyval Blanc
A white variety ideally suited to cooler climate vineyards that is capable of producing world class, award winning sparkling wines.
Solaris
Produces wonderful perfumed and subtly fruity wines. The low acidity and high sugars of this early ripening white grape translate into a gorgeous single varietal still white wine.
Velfrey Vineyard Naturiol 2021
Harvested in November 2021, Velfrey Vineyard Naturiol 2021 is made from very ripe Seyval Blanc grapes, which gives it a crunchy orchard fruit flavour. It has been naturally (Welsh: naturiol) fermented (meaning no added yeast or sugar), half in stainless steel and half in old oak barrels that were previously used for white Bordeaux which lends the gentle smoky flavour. Lees stirring introduced body and a creaminess. The two ferments were then combined before slow settling and repeated racking. No filtration or fining were used to avoid stripping out the flavour compounds.
Tasting notes
Naturally low in alcohol, Naturiol is dry white made from late harvest Seyval Blanc grapes.
On the nose:
baked apple, caramel and a hint of pineapple
On the palate:
dry and refreshing with crunchy green apple, followed by a subtle smoke and finishes with creamy buttery notes.
